Tips to Save Water
Most households can reduce water use significantly if we apply some common sense. Here are 10 very useful tips.
1. Designate one glass daily for drinking water. When you fill a glass with water, place the unused water in the refrigerator for later use. At the end of the day, clean all glasses thoroughly and continue the routine the next day.
2. Use efficient water sprinklers for your lawn so that you are not watering the street. If you can stand in the street in front of your house, you need to rethink your sprinkler planning if you’re soaked after 5 minutes.
3. Don’t run water for the duration of washing hands, brushing teeth, shaving and other personal hygiene procedures. Running water doesn’t help to wash your hands; it helps to rinse them. Ditto for brushing your teeth. Shaving too !!
4. Don’t thaw food with tap water and especially running tap water. If you need to use water, soak the frozen food in a pot filled with water.
5. Wash full loads of clothes and dishes.
6. Reuse towels just once, the earth will smile.
7. Drop facial tissues in the trash instead of flushing it.
8. When boiling different types of food, use less water than you think you’ll need because you’re probably using too much.
9. Compost and peat moss in your garden area will help the area retain moisture, therefore, reducing water use.
10. Time your showers. I’m not a proponent of 5 minute showers and I’m not a task master who wants to deprive the human race of that hot shower but 25 minute showers are not necessary.
