About that oil spill

BP’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is growing at a rate of 5,000 bbl/day.*

Given the fact that one liter of oil can contaminate one million liters (one ML), that means that the BP spill may be contaminating 795 km^2 of sea water per day. (How much is that in gallons or acre feet? A lot!)

Pessimistic Bottom Line: Damn.
Optimistic Bottom Line: No worries. 3,000 days of water to go.***

* Estimated.
** That assumes it can spread out and maximize damage.
*** the Gulf contains 2,434,000 cubic kilometers of water.

Oh, and watch Colbert’s funny/sad report on the spill.
